Foundations for every age
Drawing Classes in Chattanooga
Drawing classes in Chattanooga at Creative Art Place teach the foundations that every other art form grows from. Kids, teens and grown-ups all start with how to see, then how to put it on paper. Every supply is provided.

Why we start with drawing
Jennifer puts it simply: "we start with the foundations and we do a lot of drawing." Then we layer on materials, techniques and styles.
Drawing teaches an artist to look closely. That skill carries into painting, sculpture and everything else made at our tables.

What you'll practice
Every lesson builds on the last, and beginners are welcome at every stage.
- Line, shape, value and form
- The elements of art and the principles of design
- Perspective, including hallways that seem to go on forever
- Stippling and cross hatching
- Sketching ideas before they become paintings

Drawing classes for kids and teens
Most of our young artists are 5 to 12, and kids art classes are $120 a month for one hour every week. Teen art classes push further into technique and art history.
Homeschoolers get their own Tuesday class from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Drawing for grown-ups
Maybe you never got the foundations in school. Maybe you doodle in meetings and want to do it properly.
Private art lessons can focus on drawing alone, one hour a week, for $180 a month. Our grown-up classes are a relaxed way to start with company, and no experience is necessary.
Small details that help
Our drawing classes in Chattanooga are part of our weekly studio classes, so there's no separate course to sign up for. Drawing runs through every class.
- Pencils, paper and everything else are provided
- Join at any time of year, with no semester to wait for
- Siblings are $100 a month for each additional child
- Miss a week of kids classes and pop into another class to make it up
From a sketch to a finished piece
A drawing is often where a project begins. Students study master artists from the past alongside contemporary artists, then turn a sketch into something of their own in paint, pastel or mixed media.
See how that continues in our painting classes.
Who teaches drawing here
Our teachers are working artists. Ella Hodges, our Champion of Happy Accidents, can draw with both hands and has a B.F.A. in Graphic Design from UTC.
Jennifer Strickler has taught drawing and painting to Chattanooga students for 21 years, and every lesson still starts with the basics.
Sharpen your pencil
