What process art means

In process art, the making matters more than the finished picture. Little artists explore paint, texture and color their own way, and no two pieces turn out alike.

Jennifer describes it as "kind of a Montessori type learning experience." There's no model to copy and no wrong answer.

That's why our preschool art class is built around process art: the youngest artists learn by doing, at their own pace.

Hands-on, messy and theirs

Process art is all about the doing: squishing, mixing, dripping, dotting and smearing. Smocks and wipes are part of the fun. Our youngest artists get to find out what paint and clay can do before anyone asks them to make a picture of something.

  • Paint, from watercolor to bold acrylic
  • Soft pastels and oil pastels
  • Clay and sculpture
  • Collage and mixed media

Why start with process art

Little hands are still learning to hold a brush, squeeze a glue bottle and press into clay. Process art meets them right there: every attempt counts, and there's nothing to get wrong.

It also fits the way Jennifer has taught for 21 years. Start with the basics, explore as many materials as possible, and never talk down to an artist, however small.

A preschool art class in Chattanooga built this way suits children who aren't ready to sit and copy a model. They get to touch, test and change their minds.
